Stay Cool..

At first, I wanted this post to be something that everybody would like, something that would appeal to whoever read it. But after some much needed insight from my good friend Bianca, I realized that this blog and the posts that follow this, are not supposed to be what others like but are instead a tool to let others who read it get an understanding of who I really am. This blog is not something that makes me “cool” but an instrument in portraying my thoughts.

The media and America itself has instituted a need to be “cool” from a young age when brand name clothes and sneakers, flashy music videos, and million dollar mansions begin to be instilled in our minds. And for that reason our future is essentially built around the success of famous people we see on t.v., which causes innovation to cease as others become content on imitating ideas that previously existed. It would be ridiculous to say that I wasn’t one of those brainwashed kids checking the on demand channel guide for the next episode of cribs, or the newest music video to see the newest car that Lil Wayne had on the Cash Money Millionaire Video. I also was at fault of wanting to be a part of the “in” crowd. But as I look back on the past I see what the “cool” has influenced me and so many others. Now instead of first observing a new concept, people tend to bash it and criticize it before they actually understand it.

So when new ideas are introduced people feel the need to criticize it because it’s not the “cool” they’re familiar with. I say FUCK THAT! I believe that the the "cool" should be defined as an innovator or an individual that has a tendency to stay one step ahead of the current trend. In a sense this would make Pharrell, Kanye West, Kid Cudi and the Clipse among the coolest in today’s society. All of those mentioned do things based on what they feel is cool and are not afraid of the criticism they know will inevitably follow. Kanye West for example released 808’s and Heartbreak, complete with auto-tune on almost every song, not in an effort to gain fans but to express how he felt at the time. Freely influencing others through your own perception of cool is what truly is cool. Most people are afraid to step outside of the box and become different because it isn’t normal or what they’re used to.

So thanks bink for the insight, and helping me on my way. From this point on I will no longer let others influence what I think is cool. As for the readers, stay cool. Stay cool by being you, by expressing your uniqueness and desire to stand out in a crowd at all times, and at everything you do. Not through the perceptions of others but in the unique way that you think is “cool”.

Wow, Michael Heckstall. I teared up reading this. I am so proud that you had this awakening. I have to be honest though, I was a bit surprised just because of what you said in your post "brainwashed". But just think you are awake and aware now..now you can start living. There is a whole seperate world of awakened people that seem to coexist with the rest. Reading your post just made me so happy. If you really want to be un-brainwashed check out if you have not already music artist like Immortal Technique (the 3rd world album is good but really explicit), dead prez, & gang starr. There's alot more artist, but as most is in books and u know that if you wanna hide something from a black person then put it in a book.
